Perhaps its my youth, but I don’t understand why we are still arguing about Northern Ireland.
The fuss and bother caused by our Queen’s visit south of the border seems totally out of proportion to how both Irish and British people really feel about our shared history.
We’ve managed to almost completely stop bombing and shooting one another, so why not take the logical step and hold a referendum in Ulster on unionism versus republicanism.
It would take some time to organise and it’d be a logistical nightmare given the Irish diaspora who should be eligible in such a vote. So we should get cracking, no?
It would doubtless cause trouble in its planning, execution and aftermath, but important things shouldn’t be avoided just because they’re hard.
