You're probably right. I should have checked the routes more thoroughly. Although there's the possibility that Virgin improved becaue Wrexham and Shropshire could have started competing with them. I'd have to see how contestable the other routes are. Although I'm probably just plain over playing my hand.

Not really. Wrexham and Shropshire’s trains from London only ever stopped in Wrexham and a few places in Shropshire – which Virgin trains didn’t directly serve – so for the vast majority of people using Virgin they weren’t a viable competitor. (I lived in the Midlands at that time and went to considerable lengths to avoid using Virgin trains, but Wrexham and Shropshire was never an option for me.) Virgin did face rather more genuine competition from London Midland and Chiltern Railways, but that has been consistently so for some years now, so it can’t explain the quality spurt and subsequent plateau.
